Troye Sivan turns ‘Party’ into a celebration of queer freedom with Madonna and Ian McKellen by his side

Troye Sivan unveils ‘Party’, a dance anthem inspired by Melbourne nights, with a spectacular video transforming an English castle into an uninhibited celebration. Troye Sivan knows exactly what happens when a song leaves your headphones and reaches the place it was truly made for: the dance floor. That almost physical sensation lies at the heart of ‘Party’, his new single, an euphoric, repetitive and hypnotic track designed for losing all sense of time amid music, bodies and a night that never seems to end. The song’s origins are closely connected to the artist’s own story and his relationship with dance music. Sivan particularly recalls the bush doofs — outdoor electronic music parties — he experienced while growing up in Melbourne, forming part of a musical education he is now revisiting from an adult perspective. “Dance music sounds very different on a dance floor than it does coming out of your laptop speaker. The repetition becomes almost hypnotic, and I wanted to play with structure in that way,” the singer explains. That sense of repetition is one of the driving forces behind ‘Party’. The track features a sample of Madonna’s ‘Music’, the unforgettable hit released in 2000, creating a bridge between two generations of pop artists who have understood the dance floor as something far more significant than simply a place for entertainment. The song also brings together Luka Kloser, Elvira Anderfjärd, Tove Burman, Leland, Tyde Levi, Rob Feher and Styalz Fuego. Tyde Levi’s involvement carries particular personal significance: it marks his first official release with Troye after years of sharing music and a lifetime together as brothers. While the song is an immediate invitation to dance, its music video takes the idea of a party into an entirely cinematic realm. Directed by Gordon von Steiner, the video leaves the contemporary nightclub behind and transports the celebration to the historic Berkeley Castle in England. The setting is transformed into a period party dominated by opulence, extravagant styling and deliberately excessive energy. The contrast between the historic architecture and the song’s hedonistic spirit turns the visuals into a fantasy in which past and present appear to coexist over the course of a single night. Sir Ian McKellen joins this universe as narrator, further heightening the theatrical nature of the project. Behind all the spectacle, however, lies a far more intimate message. For Troye Sivan, club culture and the dance floor are deeply connected to queer freedom. They are spaces where many people can experience, perhaps for the first time, what it feels like to enter a room and not be part of a minority, even if only for a few hours. According to the artist, stepping onto a dance floor and discovering that you are no longer the exception can become a “really formative and liberating” experience. That idea runs throughout ‘Party’: dancing is presented not simply as entertainment, but as a form of belonging, discovery and personal expression. The release also opens another chapter in Sivan’s latest musical era. ‘Party’ follows ‘She’s the Best’, the first taste of his forthcoming record project. https://youtu.be/Yvl4QSAyWR4?si=1DuKeoCzOXO_Ewnf
