The choice of Austin Butler as Patrick Bateman in the new American Psycho has raised concerns about whether his beauty might work against him.

The rumour that Austin Butler will star in the new adaptation of American Psycho, directed by Luca Guadagnino, has sparked controversy among those involved in the original 2000 film. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kerry Barden, the casting director for Mary Harron’s film, expressed doubts that Butler might not be the ideal choice to embody the iconic Patrick Bateman.

“Austin is so beautiful that I would have cast him as Paul Allen, not Bateman,” said Barden, recalling that Jared Leto’s beauty was one of the main reasons he was cast in that role at the time. While he acknowledged Butler’s acting talent, he pointed out that playing Bateman requires a different type of presence, one that is more unsettling.

Guadagnino’s new version, based on a script by Scott Z. Burns, will not be a straightforward remake, but rather a reinterpretation of Bret Easton Ellis‘s novel. The director himself teased at CinemaCon that they are working hard to offer a fresh and provocative take on the original material.

Meanwhile, Butler continues to solidify his career after successes such as Elvis, The Bikeriders, and Dune: Part Two, awaiting new cinematic challenges.
