The British actor defends Essiedu’s talent against discriminatory comments regarding his role as Snape in the new television adaptation.
Jason Isaacs, known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the original Harry Potter saga, has come out in defence of Paapa Essiedu, the actor chosen to play Severus Snape in the upcoming TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s books. During his participation in a panel at FanExpo Denver last Saturday, 5th July, Isaacs openly criticised the racist comments some fans have posted on social media about the casting.
“Paapa Essiedu is one of the best actors I’ve ever seen in my life,” Isaacs stated in an interview with Collider. “I’ve seen people online being rude to him. What they’re being is racist. The entire cast of the new Harry Potter series is incredible. I hope they choke on their tongues — their digital tongues — when they see what [Paapa] does on screen.”
Essiedu’s casting as Snape has sparked debates on social media, especially among more conservative sections of the fandom. However, the strong defence from a key figure of the franchise like Isaacs marks significant support for the talent and diversity of the new cast.
