Drake Bell reveals he does not receive royalties from Nickelodeon and exposes the harsh financial reality after being a child star.
Drake Bell, remembered by millions of fans as one of the leads of the iconic series ‘Drake & Josh‘, has once again made headlines by confessing that he does not receive royalties for his work on Nickelodeon, despite the show continuing to be broadcast and streamed on multiple platforms.
During an interview on ‘The Unplanned Podcast‘, the 39-year-old actor and singer surprised audiences by speaking candidly about his finances and what really goes on behind the scenes in the world of children’s television. “The sad thing for most of us on Nickelodeon is that we don’t get royalties for our shows,” he revealed. According to Bell, most of the actors received a one-time payment for their work, with no compensation for reruns or ongoing use of their image.
The popular series ‘Drake & Josh‘, which aired between 2004 and 2007, still has marathon broadcasts on TV and was recently added to Netflix’s catalogue, where it managed to reach the top 10. However, Bell claims he hasn’t seen a penny from these new airings. “Netflix bought it, it’s in the top 10, and I have to figure out how to pay rent this month,” he said, describing the harsh reality of many child actors who were icons of a generation.
The actor also strongly criticised the payment system in the children’s entertainment industry, calling it corrupt. “There are a lot of evil and corrupt people. That’s the only explanation,” he stated. Additionally, he compared his situation to that of the Friends cast, who still earn millions every year thanks to syndication. “Each member of the Friends cast is making over $20 million a year without filming a single episode,” he pointed out.
Drake Bell emphasised that public perception is often far from reality. “People think if they saw you on TV, you must be rich. But we’re talking about contracts that literally say ‘in perpetuity, across universes, galaxies, and planets’,” he explained, referring to the terms that allow companies to keep exploiting content without paying additional royalties.
These statements have reopened the debate about the rights of child actors and the practices of major media conglomerates like Viacom, Nickelodeon’s parent company. While many assume child stars live lives full of luxury, Bell’s story reveals a much darker side of the entertainment industry.
His testimony has sparked a strong reaction on social media and within the industry, adding pressure to an urgent conversation about fair compensation and protection for young artists whose images continue to generate millions while they struggle to stay afloat.
