Demi Lovato and Keke Palmer reflect on relationships with older men during their adolescence, questioning dynamics long normalised within the entertainment industry.

Artists Demi Lovato and Keke Palmer recently opened up about their experiences dating much older men while they were teenagers, sparking a broader conversation about exploitation and pressure within the entertainment industry.

The former child stars revisited these experiences during a recent episode of the podcast ‘Baby, This is Keke Palmer’, where both reflected on the relationships they had with significantly older partners when they were still adolescents.

During the conversation, Keke Palmer recalled that she began dating when she was only 15 years old, a period when she was already working intensely in the entertainment world. Looking back now, she acknowledges that situations that once felt normal now appear deeply troubling.

“I was 15… why was my boyfriend 20?,” the actress and singer said during the episode. Demi Lovato responded with an even more striking reflection: Why was my boyfriend 30?”.

Both agreed that at the time they were not fully aware of how problematic those relationships were. According to the artists, growing up within the entertainment industry can distort perceptions of what is appropriate, especially when young performers are surrounded primarily by adults.

The conversation also explored the emotional impact of revisiting those experiences later in life. Demi Lovato mentioned that her song ‘29’ was inspired by a relationship with an older man she had during her youth. Looking back on that period, she explained that time and perspective dramatically changed how she now understands what happened.

Lovato said it was only when she turned 30 that she fully grasped the implications of the situation. What once seemed normal now feels deeply unsettling in hindsight.

For her part, Keke Palmer explained that reaching adulthood can bring a difficult moment of awareness. When she eventually reached the same age as many of the people around her during her teenage years, she began to realise that some dynamics may have involved exploitation or manipulation.

Palmer said that at 15, she believed those relationships were natural because she was already working in a professional environment dominated by adults. In her mind, dating someone older seemed consistent with the life she was living at the time.

The conversation also referenced Hilary Duff, who recently released the song ‘Mature’, where she reflects on a similar experience during her own teenage years.

Beyond the personal stories, the dialogue between Demi Lovato and Keke Palmer highlights a broader debate about how early fame, media pressure and power structures can influence the personal lives of young stars in the entertainment industry.
