Miu Miu and New Balance unveil the new 530 SL Ballerinas, a hybrid between a trainer and ballet flat available in two distinctive finishes.
The relationship between Miu Miu and New Balance enters a new chapter and, this time, the two brands are taking their experimentation towards one of the shoes that has defined recent seasons. The classic ballet flat meets the world of trainers to create the new 530 SL Ballerinas, a reinterpretation that transforms the familiar sporty silhouette into something far more delicate and open.
The collaboration begins with the New Balance 530 SL, but radically alters its proportions. The result retains recognisable elements of a trainer while introducing the openness and visual lightness associated with a ballet flat. It is an unexpected combination that perfectly reflects Miu Miu’s ability to transform seemingly everyday pieces into some of each season’s most coveted items.
The new Miu Miu x New Balance 530 SL Ballerinas arrive in two versions. The first, called White, is crafted from leather with a distressed finish that disrupts the pristine appearance traditionally associated with the colour. The second, Cinnamon, uses washed délavé suede to create a faded, slightly aged shade of brown.
Both are built on a calfskin base, although the different surface treatments give each version a distinctly individual personality. The lived-in appearance is no coincidence either: distressed finishes have become a recurring code throughout the collaborations between the two brands.
Despite its new silhouette, Miu Miu avoids turning the model into a conventional ballet flat. The laces remain at the front, serving as an immediate reminder of its sporting origins. The opening, however, exposes more of the foot and visually shifts the lacing system towards the toe.
A rubber sole featuring New Balance branding is also retained, while a removable fabric-covered insole provides another reference to technical footwear. Miu Miu’s name, meanwhile, is screen-printed across the upper, heel and insole, avoiding the need for unnecessary metal detailing.
The design also preserves the panelling and slim sole that characterise the 530 SL models previously developed by the two brands. However, the double-lacing system seen on some earlier versions has disappeared, resulting in a visually cleaner construction.
The choice of a ballet-inspired silhouette is hardly surprising within Miuccia Prada’s universe. Miu Miu has spent several seasons exploring this style of footwear and has played a significant role in bringing it back into the contemporary wardrobe. From overtly feminine versions to sportier interpretations, the brand has demonstrated that the silhouette offers far more possibilities than its traditionally classic appearance might suggest.
The partnership with New Balance, which began several years ago and has expanded through different versions of the 530 SL since 2024, has effectively become a laboratory for experimenting with that idea. Suede, mesh, aged finishes and altered constructions have all helped move the model away from its purely athletic identity.
Now, the 530 SL Ballerinas take that transformation even further. Rather than choosing between trainers and ballet flats, Miu Miu proposes wearing both at once.
