Dylan Sprouse has revealed a surprising discovery about his family’s ancestry, joking that he and twin brother Cole Sprouse may be descended from relatives who married into the same family over generations.

Dylan Sprouse has surprised fans with an unexpected revelation about his family history. The 34-year-old actor, who rose to international fame alongside his twin brother Cole Sprouse in Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, recently discovered an unusual connection between different branches of his family tree. The findings were so unexpected that he decided to share them publicly, making a provocative joke about his own ancestry.

During an episode of his Wildmen podcast, the actor explained that he had been investigating his family’s origins through a genealogy service when he uncovered connections he had never previously known about. What began as a personal exploration of his heritage eventually led to a surprising discovery involving relatives from both sides of his family.

According to Dylan Sprouse, his research revealed that members of his maternal and paternal families had travelled to California during the Gold Rush era, a period that attracted thousands of people hoping to build new lives in the American West.

As he continued exploring historical records and connecting with previously unknown relatives, the actor discovered that the two family lines appeared to have crossed paths more than once.

“When I first took it, my actual breakdown of history was very different than it is now,” Dylan explained, referring to the changes in the information provided by the genealogy service.

He also revealed that the investigation had allowed him to reconnect with relatives he had never met, particularly on his father’s side, where family relationships had become increasingly distant over the years.

“I’ve found a lot of family members, weirdly, who I never met, because my dad’s side of the family is pretty fractured,” he said.

The most surprising part of the discovery came when Dylan realised that branches of his family had apparently married into one another during the late nineteenth century, before separating and eventually reconnecting through his own parents.

“Get this: the families marry in California in the late 1800s. And then they diverged. And then they married again…with my mom and my dad, like last generation,” he revealed.

The revelation prompted laughter from his podcast co-host, Brendan Columbus, who jokingly questioned whether the actor’s parents might share the same grandparents.

Dylan responded with humour, joking that he and Cole Sprouse were “children of incest” because of the apparent historical overlap between their family lines.

However, his comments were made in a humorous context, and the discovery does not establish that his parents are closely related. The actor was referring to possible ancestral connections across several generations rather than presenting confirmed evidence of a close familial relationship.

Beyond the unexpected marriages, Dylan also shared another fascinating detail about the Sprouse family history: the remarkable number of twins appearing throughout different generations.

The actor explained that his father’s uncles were identical twins, while several sets of twins had also appeared on his mother’s side of the family.

“We have seven sets of twins in four generations, which is crazy. That’s a lot of twins,” he said, highlighting a pattern that had caught his attention during the investigation.

He then jokingly connected the frequency of twins to his genealogical findings, exclaiming: “The reason why we have a lot of twins is it’s the same family!”

Although the actor delivered the comment as a joke, the genetics of twin births are considerably more complex, and the family connections he described do not establish an explanation for the number of twins among his relatives.

The revelation has brought renewed attention to Dylan and Cole Sprouse, whose careers began when they were children and who became two of Disney Channel’s most recognisable stars.

While both brothers have since pursued separate acting careers and personal projects, their shared childhood in the entertainment industry remains an important part of their public identity.
