The founding and evolution of Jessica Alba’s The Honest Company, from its launch in 2012 to the present day.
In commemoration of Jessica Alba‘s birthday on April 28, who turns 43, we delve into the story of the “clean” company she co-founded and which went public in 2021. Alba announced earlier this month that she was stepping down from her role as chief creative officer.
It was in 2012 when Jessica Alba launched The Honest Company. Four years earlier, while expecting her eldest daughter, Honor, the actress, known for starring in the Fox series “Dark Angel” in 2000 and appearing in films such as “Fantastic Four” and “Sin City,” envisioned creating “clean” but design-conscious and affordable baby products. As a mother of three, she partnered with entrepreneurs Christopher Gavigan, Brian Lee, and Sean Kane with sustainability and transparency in mind.
There were 17 products unveiled at the launch, including diapers, wipes, shampoo, sunscreen, and cleaning products. Honest has grown immensely since then, now offering three categories of products: diapers and wipes, skincare and personal care under the Honest Beauty brand, and home and wellness.
The significant news came in 2021 when The Honest Company went public, with the IPO raising $412.8 million. With an omnichannel focus, the brand grew to be found in approximately 50,000 retail points in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Shifting its focus in North America to drive growth, in 2022 the company expanded to Walmart, and a year later, with Carla Vernón (formerly of Amazon) leading as CEO, it was announced that The Honest Company would exit the European and Asian markets.
In 2023, The Honest Company achieved a 10 percent year-over-year revenue increase, totaling $344 million. Results were driven by new distribution and price increases in the retail channel, which grew by 2 percent, and double-digit growth in digital consumption, which increased by 20 percent, according to the company.
And now, just this month, Alba revealed the latest: she has resigned as chief creative officer. She shared the news on Instagram on April 9, writing: “It is with a grateful heart that, twelve years after founding The Honest Company, I am stepping away from my role as chief creative officer. However, I will continue to provide strategic guidance through my position on the board. While it would never be an easy time to make this decision, I know we have a leadership team with Carla Vernón at the helm to advance our foundational vision and strengthen Honest’s legacy as a change agent in the industry.” Alba will “shift her creative energy to new projects” while providing “her support and leadership” on the board, The Honest Company said in a statement.
