Alec Baldwin is suing New Mexico prosecutors for malicious prosecution in the fatal ‘Rust’ shooting case, seeking justice and compensation.

Actor Alec Baldwin has filed a lawsuit against New Mexico prosecutors and sheriff’s officials, alleging malicious prosecution following the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of ‘Rust’ in October 2021.

Baldwin, 66, was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter after the incident, where a live round discharged from a prop gun he was handling, resulting in Hutchins’ death. The charges were dismissed in July 2024 after a judge found that prosecutors had withheld critical evidence.

In his lawsuit, Baldwin accuses special prosecutor Kari Morrissey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, and other officials of intentionally concealing exculpatory evidence and pursuing charges for personal and political gain. He alleges that their actions led to significant personal and professional damages, including loss of job opportunities and reputational harm.

The actor’s legal team argues that the prosecution was blinded by a desire to convict Baldwin for all the wrong reasons, seeking to scapegoat him to maliciously bring about or advance his trial and conviction. Baldwin is seeking compensatory and punitive damages through a jury trial, aiming to hold the defendants accountable for their alleged misconduct and to prevent similar actions against others in the future.

This lawsuit adds a new chapter to the ongoing legal battles stemming from the tragic incident on the “Rust” set, highlighting concerns over firearms safety in the film industry and the responsibilities of those handling weapons on set.
