Bob Dylan experts praise Timothée Chalamet’s performance and voice after the release of the ‘A Complete Unknown’ trailer, generating great excitement.

In a dozen interviews, some of the most prominent Dylan experts expressed cautious optimism about the upcoming biopic by James Mangold.

Timothée Chalamet faced significant challenges before the set photos appeared online. By accepting the role of Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s ‘A Complete Unknown,’ the 28-year-old Chalamet willingly placed himself at the center of criticism from devoted Dylan fans, who are not easily impressed.

When photos of Chalamet in character leaked on social media, the response was mostly negative. Dylan fans, or “Dylanologists,” lost faith in the project and criticized every detail of Chalamet’s outfit. But then the trailer was released, showcasing Mangold’s vision with Chalamet’s emotional rendition of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” and the cynical skepticism transformed into cautious optimism.

In interviews with Variety following the trailer’s release, Dylan experts, including authors, critics, scholars, and podcast hosts, were impressed by Chalamet’s commitment to the role and his voice. While many still have reservations, they acknowledge that they are not the target audience for ‘A Complete Unknown,’ and there is unanimous excitement about Chalamet introducing Dylan to a new generation. As Erin Callahan, host of the podcast “Infinity Goes Up on Trial,” says: “If the movie is great, it will be wonderful. And if it’s bad, it will still be great.”
