Matthieu Blazy leaves Bottega Veneta to join the French fashion house.

On Thursday, 12 December, Matthieu Blazy announced his resignation as Creative Director of Bottega Veneta, just hours after Louise Trotter, who was rumoured to be his replacement, stepped down from her role at Carven. Half an hour later, Trotter was named Creative Director of Bottega Veneta, while Blazy announced his appointment as Creative Director of Chanel. This move put an end to nearly a month of speculation. The Franco-Belgian designer confirmed the news in an interview with Le Figaro, expressing his delight at joining Chanel and his eagerness to begin this new chapter in his life.

Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel’s Fashion Division, also shared a statement on behalf of the brand: “We are thrilled to welcome him. Matthieu embodies a new generation with a genuinely humble approach to the brand, to creation in its broadest sense, and a profound respect and passion for the product,” he said, adding that Blazy will officially join Chanel in April. Matthieu Blazy also took a moment to acknowledge the team at Bottega Veneta that had been his home for the past few years: “To the wonderful Bottega team, thank you for the great adventure,” he posted on Instagram, alongside a photograph of hands holding a bouquet of crocheted flowers.

There is no doubt that the legacy Blazy has left at Bottega Veneta is unparalleled. Since 2021, the designer has continuously impressed with creations that, while staying true to the Italian brand’s identity, pushed boundaries with bold, distinctive, and effortlessly stylish garments and accessories. His pieces were rarely what they seemed, as exemplified by the Intrecciato woven bags that mimicked the look and texture of banana leaves. His arrival at Chanel not only marks a new chapter in fashion history but also heralds many positive changes for the French fashion house.
