Danielle Slavik, the iconic Balenciaga model, has died in Paris at the age of 81, leaving behind an enduring legacy in the world of fashion.
A symbol of haute couture and one of the muses of the renowned designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, Slavik passed away in Paris aged 81. Her death was confirmed by French newspaper Le Figaro, prompting a wave of tributes across the fashion industry.
Slavik played a key role at the Balenciaga fashion house between 1964 and 1968, a period during which she worked directly with the Spanish couturier until his retirement. Her elegance, discipline, and stage presence made her one of the most recognised models on the Parisian fashion scene during haute couture’s golden era.

Following the closure of the Balenciaga house in 1968, Slavik continued a distinguished career that spanned a further two decades. She walked for legendary names such as Chanel, Madame Grès, and Hubert de Givenchy, cementing her status as a respected and admired figure on the international catwalks.
In 2022, Danielle Slavik made a return to fashion after more than 30 years out of the public eye. It was Demna, then creative director of Balenciaga, who personally invited her to take part in his second haute couture collection. Slavik accepted the invitation as a tribute to Cristóbal Balenciaga, overcoming her own insecurities about age and public exposure. Her appearance in the show became one of the season’s most celebrated moments.
In a subsequent interview, Demna described her participation as a deeply transformative experience, both professionally and personally. He spoke of her as a woman of exceptional inner beauty and a direct link to the original values of the maison.

In an interview with WWD, Danielle Slavik once recalled how her modelling career began almost by accident, when she accompanied a friend to a casting. She was hired on the spot. Though her first salary was modest, her passion for fashion sustained her through the demanding years of daily shows and hard work. Upon meeting Balenciaga, she felt an instant connection, which she described as “love at first sight.” She remembered him as a generous, reserved man with great artistic sensitivity.
As a gesture of gratitude for her participation in the 2022 show, Demna gifted her a replica of a black velvet dress with long sleeves from the Winter 1966 collection. Slavik considered it her favourite piece from her entire career. The original dress was purchased by Grace Kelly and worn to her 40th birthday celebration in Monaco.
Slavik also walked in 2023 and continued to be present at Balenciaga events during Paris Fashion Week. Her final runway appearance was in the Autumn 2024 haute couture collection by designer Peet Dullaert. In January 2025, she attended the ceremony at which Demna was named a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in France.
Danielle Slavik leaves an indelible mark on fashion history. Her legacy is one of elegance, dedication, and a genuine connection to haute couture. The funeral service will be held this Friday in Paris.
