‘Superman’ takes off strongly under the direction of James Gunn, positioning itself as the third biggest film opening of 2025.

The much-anticipated reinterpretation of ‘Superman’, directed by James Gunn, has conquered the global box office, reaching $217 million in its opening weekend. According to Variety, the film earned $122 million in the United States, making it the third best debut of the year, behind only A Minecraft Movie and Lilo & Stitch.

The film, which cost $225 million to produce and another $100 million on promotion, demonstrates the commercial strength of DC Studios’ new creative direction. Its international performance added a further $95 million across 78 markets, although some analysts note that the response outside the US has been more moderate. “Superman has always been a deeply American icon, which influences its global reception,” explained David A. Gross from FranchiseRe.

David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, highlighted: “Three years ago, I trusted James Gunn and Peter Safran to unify DC’s vision. Today, that bet is starting to pay off.” Undoubtedly, the new Man of Steel has taken flight with figures that promise a stronger cinematic universe.
