Kit Connor Reveals His Sexuality, Talks Coming Out and the Impact of Heartstopper in a New Interview

Kit Connor opens up about a multitude of topics in a new interview with British Vogue!

The 19-year-old actor spoke about how he came to accept his sexuality, whether he felt pressured to come out, and even how being part of Heartstopper has impacted others.

“It was a very natural process for me; I didn’t really have a ‘oh shit’ moment. It just became more and more apparent,” he shared about accepting his sexuality.

Regarding being bisexual and the associated stigmas, Kit said, “It’s the experience of maybe being too straight to be gay and too gay to be straight. So it’s like, ‘Where do I fit?’ But now I feel much more secure in myself.”

Kit publicly came out as bisexual in October 2022, after facing criticism for his choice of role in the Netflix series, where he plays a bisexual teenager who also embraces his sexuality.

“I’m a young guy, so I’m already going through certain things, in terms of life and mental health,” he said about his coming out tweet. “I just needed to release that energy.”

“I don’t think ‘forced’ is the right word I would use, but I would say I would have preferred to do it differently,” Kit added. “I also don’t know if I would have ever done it. But at the end of the day, I don’t regret it. In many ways, it was really empowering.”

Kit also spoke about how lucky he feels to be part of a series like Heartstopper, which has had a great impact on others. He has even been stopped on the street by other teenagers and fans who tell him how much he and his character have helped them.

“As an actor, you don’t always get the fortune to be able to do a project that you feel really has an impact on people. I feel super lucky to have been able to do that,” he shared. “The idea that you’re having an impact on someone’s life, especially a stranger, is really special.”
