Louis Tomlinson shares on BBC Radio 2 that ‘Story of My Life’ marked a turning point for One Direction and reshaped their sound.
During an interview on BBC Radio 2 with Scott Mills, Louis Tomlinson revisited the legacy of One Direction with a revelation that highlights the band’s evolution. The singer opened up about his favourite song from the group and why it represented a defining moment in their career.
“My favourite One Direction song is probably ‘Story of My Life’. I think it was a real moment for us,” he explained. Released in 2013 as part of the album ‘Midnight Memories’, the track was not only a commercial success — reaching number 2 in the UK and entering the Top 10 in the United States — but also a key creative shift.
For Tomlinson, the significance of the song goes beyond chart performance. “It’s not the kind of song you’d expect from a band like One Direction. There’s something more to it,” he said, highlighting how the single allowed the group to move beyond the “teen pop” label that had defined their early years.
Formed on ‘The X Factor UK’ in 2010, One Direction — made up of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, the late Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson — quickly became one of the biggest forces in global pop. However, their musical evolution was gradual.
Tomlinson has previously acknowledged that early hits like ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ leaned towards a lighter, almost cinematic teen-pop narrative. In contrast, ‘Story of My Life’ introduced a level of maturity that resonated with both audiences and critics.
“There was a very clear mould of what a boy band should be, and that song helped us break out of it,” he added.
Following the group’s indefinite hiatus in 2016, Louis Tomlinson has built a solid solo career. In 2026, he released his third album, ‘How Did I Get Here?’, and is now preparing for a new global tour.
