The singer opened the 2026 MTV VMAs with one of the night’s most ambitious performances, a spectacle built around her latest artistic era that brought together music, striking visual references and a string of surprise appearances.
Held on Sunday, 27 September, the ceremony began firmly within the world of the Queen of Pop. The full performance, which was later officially released, now offers a different edit from the version originally broadcast during the ceremony, featuring alternative camera angles that provide a closer look at some of its standout moments.
For her return to the VMAs, Madonna created a production directly connected to her ‘Confessions II’ era. The performance began with the intro to ‘One Step Away’, incorporating visual elements associated with Confessions II – The Film and setting the scene for a spectacle in which each new setting felt like an extension of the wider project.
But Madonna was not alone. One of the most eagerly anticipated moments came with the appearance of Sabrina Carpenter, who joined Madonna to perform ‘Bring Your Love’, their collaboration together. Bringing two generations of pop together made their on-stage encounter one of the defining images of the opening performance.
The show then continued with ‘Danceteria Afterhours’, which saw Charli xcx make her entrance.
