James Gunn teases a surprising storyline where Superman and Lex Luthor collaborate to face a threat that changes everything.

The DC cinematic universe continues to reshape under James Gunn’s vision, this time with a twist as unexpected as it is promising. During his appearance on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show, the writer and director unveiled the first details of ‘Man of Tomorrow’, the direct sequel to ‘Superman’. Filming is set to begin in April 2026, with a theatrical release scheduled for 9 July 2027.

Gunn confirmed that this new instalment won’t be a classic hero-versus-villain narrative. On the contrary: “It’s a story about Superman and Lex Luthor having to work together to some extent against a much, much bigger threat. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” he explained. “I love the script. I love working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to Lex, sadly. I wanted to create something extraordinary between the two of them.”

This bold direction promises to redefine the dynamic between two of the most iconic comic-book figures, turning Luthor into more than just a simple antagonist. He becomes a co-lead with narrative weight, emotional depth, and space to explore his moral ambiguity.

With such a daring proposal, ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is shaping up to be one of the boldest bets in the DC universe, making it clear that in this new chapter, shades of grey matter more than ever.
