The highly anticipated documentary ‘Norita,’ produced by the iconic actress and activist Jane Fonda, is now available and promises to move audiences worldwide with the powerful story of Nora “Norita” Cortiñas. Directed by Jayson McNamara and Andrea Tortonese, this work premiered globally on June 25 at the Dances With Films festival in Hollywood.
‘Norita’ tells the incredible life of Nora Cortiñas, one of the founders of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, the courageous Argentine mothers’ movement that emerged in the 1970s to fight against the forced disappearance of their children by the right-wing military regime in Argentina. The story begins in April 1977, just weeks after Cortiñas’ son, Carlos Gustavo, was kidnapped and disappeared. What began as a desperate personal search transformed into a global symbol of the fight for human rights.
Jane Fonda, alongside other prominent executive producers like composer Gustavo Santaolalla and activist Naomi Klein, joins this production to bring visibility to a story that remains relevant in today’s context of human rights and social justice. McNamara commented, “It is an honor to have Jane’s support. Her involvement underscores the importance of Norita’s story and its global impact.”
The documentary includes unseen footage of Norita during her activism in the women’s movement in Argentina and impactful archives spanning her five decades of struggle. Additionally, the film is enriched with animation sequences directed by Tortonese, adding an artistic dimension to the historical narrative.
‘Norita’ not only pays tribute to Nora Cortiñas, who passed away at the age of 94 following an operation, but also serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for those facing injustices worldwide. As Cortiñas once said in an interview cited by Clarín, “Losing a child is always a tragedy, but we must work not to get trapped in that labyrinth and to be able to help those in the same situation.”
Although it premiered in Los Angeles just last week, ‘Norita’ will be available to the rest of the world in the coming months.
