The singer turned to Hussein Chalayan to create one of the most unexpected moments of her new tour.
Olivia Rodrigo has kicked off her new The Unraveled Tour with a surprise that transformed one of her musical numbers into a full-blown fashion spectacle. The artist launched her new run of concerts, scheduled across this year and next, with a major opening show at the PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. There, she not only won over the audience with her songs, carefully crafted staging and powerful live performance, but also introduced an unexpected fashion moment with a dress capable of transforming on stage before the audience’s eyes.
The moment came during her performance of The Cure, when Rodrigo appeared in a white mini dress with a high neckline and pleated skirt. At first glance, the design fitted perfectly with the romantic silhouettes that have become part of the wardrobe for this new era, particularly when compared with some of the pieces she had worn earlier in the show. Nothing seemed particularly unusual, with all eyes focused on Olivia and the elaborate musical performance unfolding on stage. However, as the song reached its climax, artificial rain began to fall around her.
That was when the garment literally started to disappear. The white outer fabric gradually disintegrated on contact with the water, almost as though a layer of paper were dissolving over her body, eventually revealing a red corseted bodysuit and mini skirt underneath. The transformation brought the concept behind The Unraveled Tour to life on stage in the most literal way possible.
A Hussein Chalayan design revived ten years later
Behind the garment is Hussein Chalayan, the Cyprus-born British designer renowned for exploring the boundaries between fashion, technology and performance. The bespoke dress created for Rodrigo revisits one of the most memorable ideas from his Spring 2016 collection.
During that catwalk show, two models appeared wearing white, paper-like garments with a military-inspired aesthetic. Hidden sprinklers then began spraying them with water, causing the outer layers to gradually dissolve and reveal printed dresses embellished with crystals underneath — an ambitious technical creation that took six months to develop.
Olivia Rodrigo has now revived the concept and transported it into the world of the contemporary pop spectacle. Rather than simply wearing an archival-inspired design, the singer has incorporated its transformation directly into the narrative of her performance, turning fashion into another element of the show itself.
It is not the first time Rodrigo has used her wardrobe as an important part of her live performances. During the GUTS tour, she popularised T-shirts featuring different messages in each city, while her more recent work has further developed an aesthetic that combines babydoll and grunge references with vintage elements.
With her disappearing Hussein Chalayan dress, however, Rodrigo has taken that relationship between music and fashion one step further, recovering an unforgettable runway concept and giving it an entirely new life on the concert stage.
