A controversial question in an interview sparked rumours of jealousy within BLACKPINK, but Rosé replied with grace and affection.
During a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Rosé, member of BLACKPINK, found herself caught up in an unexpected controversy after being asked a question as needless as it was incendiary: “Do you think your bandmates are jealous of your success?”
Far from falling into the trap, Rosé answered calmly and warmly, highlighting the bond that unites the four artists: “No, not at all. I think we all understand what it means to work on our own, and that actually brings us closer together. We share our experiences, they care about me, I love them. They’re my family, they’re like my sisters,” she said.
And indeed, it makes little sense to suggest that the other members of BLACKPINK harbour jealousy towards Rosé. Each has carved her own path, excelling in different fields. It’s true that Rosé shines particularly bright in music, but Lisa is a global phenomenon in fashion: she serves as ambassador for brands such as Bvlgari, Kith Women and Louis Vuitton, with every red carpet she graces turning into a viral event. Jennie, meanwhile, is the official face of Chanel, one of the world’s most important fashion houses, and has collaborated with brands like Beats and Adidas. And Jisoo, far from lagging behind, represents names such as Tommy Hilfiger, Self-Portrait and Alo Yoga.
Who could possibly deny that each of them is writing her own story? It’s true that Rosé has pursued her musical career with greater determination and has recently been recognised with a major award, but if her bandmates chose to focus on music with the same intensity —which is neither required nor criticisable— they would surely achieve the same, if not greater, success.
Trying to pit the girls against each other with questions straight out of the 1990s sensationalism playbook is not only outdated but entirely misplaced. It’s time to move past that forced narrative of female rivalry. BLACKPINK has proven that success can also be built on sisterhood.
