Ryan Gosling leaves the Daniels’ upcoming film due to scheduling conflicts, as Universal delays the release to November 2027.

Ryan Gosling’s schedule has just triggered one of the most unexpected shifts in Hollywood. The actor has officially stepped away from the next project by directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — known as the Daniels — leaving the production without its lead just weeks before filming was set to begin.

The film, backed by Universal Pictures, remains completely under wraps in terms of plot, but it had already been positioned as one of the major cinematic events of the coming years. However, Gosling’s departure — according to industry sources — is not linked to creative differences, but rather to an increasingly demanding schedule that proved impossible to align.

The actor is currently navigating one of the busiest phases of his career. Following the success of Project Hail Mary, which exceeded box office expectations, Gosling now faces an intensive promotional campaign, alongside his commitment to ‘Star Wars‘: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and set for release in May 2027. A schedule that, in practical terms, has left no room for his involvement in the Daniels’ new film.

The Daniels’ project arrives after the global phenomenon of Everything Everywhere All at Once, a film that reshaped contemporary cinema and dominated awards season, including the Academy Award for Best Picture. With that precedent, expectations for their next work are exceptionally high, making the loss of its lead actor even more significant.

From a strategic standpoint, the impact is already visible: Universal has decided to delay the film’s release from 12 June 2027 to 19 November 2027 — a more favourable slot to reposition the project and secure a new leading actor capable of matching Gosling’s profile.

Rather than weakening the production, this shift opens a new question within the industry: who will step in to fill the space left by one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars in one of its most ambitious upcoming projects.
