Sam Neill has died at the age of 78, leaving behind one of the most respected and versatile careers in modern cinema. The New Zealand actor, best known around the world for playing Dr Alan Grant in ‘Jurassic Park’, passed away on Monday, 13 July, in Sydney, Australia, his family confirmed in a statement.
The news has shocked fans across the world, especially as the actor had remained publicly active in recent years and had continued working across film and television. According to his family, the loss was “sudden and unexpected”, although they noted that Neill had remained cancer free after previously speaking openly about his health.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau [family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” his family said in a statement. “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. For millions of viewers, Sam Neill will forever be associated with the role of Dr Alan Grant, the palaeontologist who became one of the emotional and adventurous centres of Steven Spielberg’s original ‘Jurassic Park’. His performance in the 1993 blockbuster helped define one of the most successful franchises in cinema history, turning him into a familiar face for several generations of film fans.

Neill returned to the role in the original ‘Jurassic Park’ trilogy and later reprised the character in ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022, reuniting with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum. Earlier this year, the trio also appeared together again in a high-profile Super Bowl advert for Xfinity, a nostalgic reunion that reminded audiences of the lasting affection surrounding the original film.
Although ‘Jurassic Park’ became his most globally recognised project, Neill’s career extended far beyond the dinosaur franchise. Across several decades, he built a reputation as an actor capable of moving between blockbuster cinema, prestige drama, independent film and television with remarkable ease. His work included acclaimed roles in projects such as ‘The Piano’, ‘The Hunt for Red October’ and many other productions that showcased his quiet intensity, intelligence and emotional range.
In recent years, Sam Neill remained highly active on screen. He appeared in series including ‘The Twelve’, ‘Untamed’ and ‘Apples Never Fall’, continuing to demonstrate the same understated charisma that had made him one of the most recognisable actors of his generation. His later career also introduced him to new audiences who knew him not only as a film star, but as a warm and witty public figure.
The actor also had two projects still in development at the time of his death, meaning audiences will be able to see him on screen posthumously. He is set to appear in ‘The Last Resort’, alongside Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich, as well as the upcoming ‘Godzilla x Kong: Supernova’, which also stars Dan Stevens, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell and Delroy Lindo.
Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Sam Neill became one of the country’s most celebrated cultural figures. His career, which spanned more than five decades, earned him international recognition, award nominations and deep admiration from colleagues and audiences alike. In 2022, he was knighted for his services to the performing arts, confirming his place as one of New Zealand’s most important screen talents.
