Shawn Mendes tackles rumours about his sexuality in his new song ‘The Mountain’, confronting speculation with revealing lyrics.

The 26-year-old singer, known for hits like ‘Isn’t That Enough’, appears to address the rumours surrounding his sexuality in the track ‘The Mountain’, which is part of his upcoming album titled ‘Shawn’. Mendes has faced speculation about his sexual orientation from a young age, consistently affirming that he is heterosexual.

During a recent performance, the artist debuted ‘The Mountain’, and one line from the song seems to directly confront the rumours: “Some days I have a change of heart / You can say what you need to say,” he sings. “You can say I’m too young / You can say I’m too old / You can say I like girls or boys / Whatever fits your mold.” In the lyrics, Mendes makes it clear that he isn’t bothered by the speculation, concluding that people can “call it whatever they want.”

Over the years, Mendes has spoken out on several occasions about the rumours regarding his orientation. In 2018, he admitted feeling pressure to be seen with girls to prove his interest in women. The following year, he described the comments as “hurtful”, and in 2020, he opened up even further in an interview.

The release of the album ‘Shawn’, initially scheduled for 18 October, has been postponed to 15 November.
