Sophie Turner takes on the mantle of Lara Croft in Prime Video’s highly anticipated series, written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Sophie Turner steps into the role of one of the most iconic heroines in gaming: Lara Croft. The Game of Thrones star will lead the upcoming Tomb Raider series for Prime Video, under the creative direction of Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Based on the legendary franchise launched in 1996, this television adaptation marks Waller-Bridge’s first major project since signing her Amazon deal back in 2019. The series aims to reinvent the universe of the fearless archaeologist, previously brought to the big screen by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.
“I’m thrilled beyond measure,” Turner told Flaunt. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many, and I’m giving it everything I’ve got.” Referring to her predecessors, she added: “They’re massive shoes to fill, but with Phoebe at the helm, we — and Lara — are in very safe hands.”
The actress, who rose to worldwide fame as Sansa Stark in the HBO series and later as Jean Grey in the X-Men saga, has recently stated she is now seeking projects that are “super unique and very niche.” This series certainly fits that description.
Alongside Waller-Bridge, the creative team includes showrunner Chad Hodge (Wayward Pines, Good Behavior) and director Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, The Changeling). Filming is set to begin in January 2026.
“It’s not often you get the chance to make a series of this scale with a character you adored as a child,” said Waller-Bridge. “Everyone involved feels an overwhelming passion for Lara, and we are as bold, brave and playful as she is.”
The figure of Lara Croft, created by British studio Core Design, has become a cultural icon spanning generations. According to Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Prime Video, “she is one of the most recognised and iconic characters in the history of video games.”
