Stephen Jones, the iconic British milliner, is being honored in an exhibition in Paris celebrating his 44 years of innovation and style.
Stephen Jones, the legendary British milliner, takes center stage in a new exhibition at the Palais Galliera in Paris, titled “Stephen Jones, Chapeaux d’Artiste.” Featuring over 170 hats and 40 complete looks, the exhibit celebrates Jones’ versatility and creativity, who has worked for iconic fashion houses like Dior, Schiaparelli, and Jean Paul Gaultier throughout his 44-year career.
Born in Liverpool, Jones began to stand out in London’s Blitz club scene in the 1970s before establishing himself as the favorite milliner of Parisian designers in the 1980s. Since then, he has lived between London and Paris, infusing his work with influences from both cities. According to Jones, “London is a masculine city and Paris is feminine,” a dichotomy reflected in his designs, such as the Eiffel Tower hat or the bowler hat with the British flag.
In addition to showcasing his most memorable creations, the exhibition includes personal artifacts, such as his father’s rugby caps and mementos from his first store in 1980. Jones, who is currently the creative director of hats at Dior, remains a key figure in haute couture, proving that his art transcends fashion and generations.
