Netflix launches its most ambitious science-fiction project to date, confirming Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo as leads in the first live-action adaptation of the iconic ‘Gundam’ universe
Netflix is officially stepping into the cockpit of one of the most ambitious projects in contemporary science fiction. The platform has secured the distribution rights to the long-awaited live-action ‘Gundam’ film, as confirmed by Deadline, and has announced Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo as the leads of the first ever live-action cinematic adaptation of the legendary Mobile Suit Gundam universe. The announcement marks a turning point for a project that had spent years in development without a clear direction. With Netflix now on board and a high-profile cast attached, the Japanese franchise finally makes its definitive leap to Hollywood without losing its cultural weight or legacy.
The film is being produced by Legendary Pictures in collaboration with Bandai Namco Filmworks, the rights holder of the Gundam universe. At the helm of the project is Jim Mickle, known for his work on ‘Sweet Tooth’, who will serve as both director and screenwriter. His track record, focused more on character-driven narratives and dense atmospheres than empty spectacle, suggests a grounded, adult-oriented adaptation with genuine dramatic ambition.
Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but everything points to the film being set within the Universal Century timeline, the most iconic narrative axis of the Gundam saga. In this future, humanity has colonised space, and political and military conflicts are fought through massive mechanised suits known as Gundams, piloted by soldiers burdened with moral dilemmas, betrayals and ideological tensions.
Some reports suggest the film may draw inspiration from ‘Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team’, one of the franchise’s most realistic and hard-edged instalments, centred on a smaller-scale terrestrial conflict with a strong emotional core. If confirmed, the adaptation would favour a more intimate, war-focused perspective, moving away from abstract epic scale to explore the human cost of conflict.
As for casting, Sydney Sweeney is reportedly in talks to play a pilot from the Principality of Zeon, one of the Gundam universe’s most complex and morally ambiguous factions. Noah Centineo would portray a pilot from the Earth Federation, her direct rival and potential romantic counterpart, adding an emotional layer to a story defined by ideological opposition.
The casting of both actors is strategic. Sweeney is enjoying one of the strongest phases of her career, balancing auteur-led projects with major studio productions, while Centineo continues to solidify his transition from teen icon to franchise-level leading man. Together, they embody Netflix’s bid to appeal both to a new generation of viewers and to the long-standing global fanbase of the anime.
