Based on the controversial Facebook Files, the sequel to ‘The Social Network’ will tackle the platform’s harmful impact. Mikey Madison will play the engineer who blew the whistle.
Aaron Sorkin returns to the Facebook universe with a long-awaited sequel. Officially titled ‘The Social Reckoning’, the follow-up to ‘The Social Network’ will arrive in cinemas on 9 October 2026, almost two decades after the original release.
This new chapter features a cast led by Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, Jeremy Strong and Bill Burr, and is loosely inspired by the Facebook Files, an investigation published by the Wall Street Journal in 2021. Sorkin once again takes charge of the script and direction, while also producing alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser. Filming is set to begin in October.
‘The Social Reckoning’ is set several years after the events of the first film. This time, the story follows Frances Haugen (played by Mikey Madison), a Facebook engineer who teams up with journalist Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to expose the platform’s darker side.
The Facebook Files revealed how the company was aware of the psychological harm it inflicted on teenagers, its role in spreading disinformation, and its direct influence on violent incidents in developing countries. Described as a “companion piece” to the 2010 original, the sequel aims to address these social consequences from a more political and ethical perspective.
With this renewed critical lens on the legacy of social media, ‘The Social Reckoning’ is set to reignite the debate around Big Tech’s responsibility. The official trailer has yet to be released, but early signs suggest it will be one of the most talked-about films of 2026.
