Rami Malek recounts a racial profiling incident and reflects on racism and discrimination against immigrants in the United States.
Actor Rami Malek, known for his role in Mr. Robot, recently shared a shocking racial profiling experience during an interview with The Guardian. Malek revealed that he was slammed onto the hood of an LAPD patrol car after the police mistook him for a robbery suspect. According to the officers, the thief was of Latino descent, and Malek “fit the description.”
“I remember how hot the car engine was. It almost burned my hands,” the actor recalled. Fortunately, a Caucasian friend accompanying him clarified to the officers that Malek was Egyptian, which helped ease the tension. However, the actor admitted that during the incident, he thought, “I could go to jail for something I didn’t do.”
Malek also voiced his concern over the rising discrimination against immigrants in the United States, particularly following Donald Trump’s presidency. Despite this, he finds hope in the memoirs of former President Barack Obama, such as Dreams from My Father. According to Malek, stories like Obama’s illustrate the power of the American dream, even during difficult times. “I just hope these situations bring out the best in us,” he concluded.
