Prada opens its first standalone restaurant in Asia, designed by Wong Kar Wai, blending art, gastronomy, and cultures.

Prada has announced the opening of its first independent dining space in Asia, located at Rong Zhai, its historic restored mansion in the centre of Shanghai. The new project, named Mi Shang, is a café and restaurant designed by the renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai.

Inspired by the philatelic technique of “tête-bêche” and Wong’s unique cinematic style, the space promises to be a fusion of visual art and gastronomy. According to Prada, “the idea of reflection, adjacency, and correspondence hints at the intersection of two great cultures, connecting Milan and Shanghai in a sophisticated and unique visual dialogue.” The décor evokes scenes from iconic Wong films such as In the Mood for Love and Happy Together, incorporating mirrors and visual contrasts that aim to balance various cultural references.

The restaurant, located on the second floor of Rong Zhai, will offer a fine-dining Italian menu with Chinese influences, including breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner, and evening cocktails. Mi Shang will open its doors on March 31, with operating hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and reservations will be available from March 29 via WeChat.

This new collaboration reaffirms Prada’s commitment to promoting art and cultural practices, as it previously did with Wes Anderson at the Bar Luce in Milan.
