‘The Housemaid’ surpasses $300 million and becomes the highest-grossing film of Sydney Sweeney’s career

The psychological thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried is dominating the international box office, marking a major milestone in the actress’s career.

‘The Housemaid’ has officially crossed the $300 million mark worldwide, becoming the biggest commercial success of Sydney Sweeney’s career as a leading actress. The achievement is particularly striking for an R-rated psychological thriller with a modest budget, proving its strong appeal to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

To date, the film has grossed $116 million in the United States and $189.1 million internationally, reaching a global total of $305 million. With a reported production budget of around $35 million, the result represents an exceptional return for Lionsgate, reinforcing the enduring value of well-positioned mid-budget cinema in the global marketplace.

Released in North America just ahead of Christmas with a relatively soft opening of $19 million, the film steadily gained momentum thanks to strong word of mouth and positive reviews. In recent weeks, it has reclaimed the number-one spot in several international markets, including the United Kingdom, France, Mexico, Brazil and Spain, where it has already surpassed $12.5 million, cementing its status as one of the season’s strongest performers.

Directed by Paul Feig and adapted from the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden, the film follows a young woman with a dark past who is hired as a live-in housemaid by a wealthy family. Sydney Sweeney leads the cast, alongside Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, who portray a seemingly perfect couple hiding deeply unsettling secrets. The success has already paved the way for a sequel, ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’, currently in development, with Sweeney and Feig expected to return.

With this result, ‘The Housemaid’ overtakes Anyone But You (2023), which closed its theatrical run at $220.2 million, and marks a turning point in Sweeney’s career. The box office triumph confirms her ability to carry commercially driven projects, following the recent underperformance of Christy, the biopic centred on boxer Christy Martin.
