Justin Timberlake attempts to block release of video from his drunk-driving arrest

The legal team of Justin Timberlake is attempting to prevent the release of footage from his 2024 arrest for drink-driving, recorded by police cameras.

The legal case involving Justin Timberlake has returned to the spotlight after his lawyers filed a formal request to block the public release of the full video showing his arrest for driving under the influence. The footage, recorded by police body cameras in Sag Harbor, New York, could become public following a request submitted by several media outlets under freedom of information legislation.

The singer was arrested on 18 June 2024, when police officers stopped him after he allegedly failed to respect a stop sign and drove for several blocks without properly maintaining his lane. At the time, he was charged with a misdemeanour related to driving while intoxicated, although he initially pleaded not guilty to the accusations.

The central issue now concerns the possible release of almost eight hours of footage recorded during the traffic stop and the hours following the arrest. The Sag Harbor Police Department had planned to make the images public after a request filed by media organisations including ABC News, but the decision has been postponed while negotiations continue with the singer’s legal team.

In documents submitted to the court, Justin Timberlake’s defence argues that the footage shows the artist in a moment of “particular vulnerability”, including details about his physical condition, his speech and his behaviour during the interaction with officers. According to his lawyers, releasing the material would constitute an unjustified invasion of the singer’s privacy.

The legal team also claims that making the video public could cause serious and irreparable damage to Timberlake’s reputation and expose him to a level of media and social scrutiny that would be difficult to control. From their perspective, the release of the footage would not provide any meaningful benefit to the public interest.

Despite the current controversy, the legal proceedings were already resolved in September 2024, when Justin Timberlake agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge of driving while impaired. As part of the agreement, the artist was ordered to pay a $500 fine, record a public service announcement on road safety, and complete up to 40 hours of community service.

Now the media focus has shifted to whether authorities will ultimately allow the footage of Justin Timberlake’s arrest to be released, or whether the singer’s legal request will succeed in keeping the material out of the public domain.
