Rami Malek moved Cannes audiences to tears after receiving an eight-minute standing ovation for Ira Sachs’ emotionally devastating new film ‘The Man I Love’.

Emotion completely overtook the Cannes Film Festival during the premiere of ‘The Man I Love’, the new drama directed by Ira Sachs, when Rami Malek broke down in tears during an extended standing ovation from the audience. The Oscar-winning actor, best known for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, appeared visibly overwhelmed as the crowd inside the Palais des Festivals applauded the film for eight uninterrupted minutes following its screening.

Footage of the emotional moment quickly spread across social media, showing a deeply moved Malek standing alongside the cast while attempting to hold back tears. The film has already been described as a haunting “musical fantasy of a city under pressure”, capturing both the emotional devastation and cultural atmosphere surrounding New York during the height of the HIV crisis. Alongside Malek, the cast also includes Tom Sturridge, Rebecca Hall and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

For Ira Sachs, the project marks his return to Cannes competition following ‘Frankie’ in 2019. After appearances in major productions such as ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Nuremberg’ and ‘The Amateur’, Malek appears to have found in ‘The Man I Love’ one of the most emotionally demanding and artistically ambitious roles of his career so far.
