Disney has officially confirmed that a sequel to The Parent Trap is in development, with Lindsay Lohan set to reprise her iconic dual role alongside Lisa Ann Walter.

More than three decades after becoming one of Disney’s most beloved family classics, The Parent Trap is finally getting a sequel. The studio has officially confirmed that the project is now in development, bringing to life one of the most anticipated revivals for generations of fans.

The biggest announcement is the return of Lindsay Lohan, who will once again portray the unforgettable twins Hallie Parker and Annie James, the roles that launched her to international stardom in one of the most memorable performances of her career. Lisa Ann Walter has also been confirmed to reprise her role as the much-loved Chessy.

The sequel arrives after years of speculation and countless interviews in which members of the original cast expressed their desire to reunite and continue the story. Now, following Lindsay Lohan’s career resurgence and Disney’s recent success in revisiting some of its most iconic franchises, the studio has officially given the long-awaited project the green light.

For now, Disney has not revealed any plot details, although one of the biggest questions surrounding the sequel is how it will address the absence of Natasha Richardson, who portrayed the twins’ mother, Elizabeth James, in the 1998 film. The acclaimed actress, who was married to Liam Neeson, tragically passed away in 2009 following a skiing accident. It remains unclear whether the sequel will acknowledge the character’s passing within the story or introduce another explanation for her absence.

Released in 1998, The Parent Trap became one of Disney’s biggest family hits and introduced Lindsay Lohan as one of Hollywood’s brightest young talents. The story of twin sisters separated at birth who secretly switch places in an attempt to reunite their divorced parents has remained a favourite with audiences around the world and continues to be regarded as one of the studio’s most cherished modern classics.

The film also earned praise for Lohan’s remarkable performance, convincingly playing two distinct characters throughout the entire story. Thanks to innovative visual effects for the time, her dual role became one of the defining performances of late-1990s family cinema.

With this announcement, Disney continues its strategy of reviving some of the most iconic titles in its extensive catalogue. Although production details, the release date and additional casting have yet to be revealed, excitement is already building among fans eager to discover what life has in store for Hallie and Annie decades after their unforgettable summer camp reunion.

For many viewers who grew up with the original film, the sequel represents far more than a nostalgic return—it is the continuation of a story that has remained a treasured part of Disney history for more than 25 years.
