Dolly Parton’s family breaks its silence following her death at 80 and reveals the emotional final request the country legend had prepared.
The death of Dolly Parton at the age of 80 has left the music world mourning one of its most universally beloved figures. But behind the tributes from artists, colleagues and millions of fans is a family that has lost Dolly barely a year after another particularly painful death: that of Carl Dean, her husband of nearly six decades, who died in March 2025.
It was Bryan Seaver, the singer’s nephew, who took on the difficult responsibility of publicly announcing her death. And it was not an improvised decision. According to Seaver, Dolly herself had asked him years earlier to be the person who would face the world and announce the news when the time came.

Seaver described the responsibility as a difficult combination of honour, pride and sadness. However, he wanted to ensure that the farewell message was not dominated entirely by grief.
“The sadness is in us, not in Dolly,” he said in the statement, before recalling the deep faith that had always accompanied his aunt. For the family, Parton “lived in the light” and would now be “in the arms of Jesus”.
The message also became a reflection on a career that began when Dolly was just a child performing on local radio and television programmes and would eventually transform her into one of the most important songwriters and performers in the history of American music.

Bryan recalled that his aunt’s legacy cannot be measured solely through awards, record sales or songs. Parton wrote more than 3,000 songs throughout her life, built a film career, created Dollywood and devoted a considerable part of her wealth and public profile to philanthropic projects.
He also highlighted the way Dolly used her position to open doors for other artists and how, over the decades, she stopped belonging exclusively to the world of country music and became someone who seemed to be part of the families of millions of people.
Songs including ‘Jolene’, ‘9 to 5’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’ managed to cross generations, genres and borders. Her personality did the rest.

According to Seaver, she wanted to lie on “a bed of soft cotton”. The explanation she gave him retained the sense of humour with which Dolly approached even the most serious subjects: after wearing heavy rhinestones throughout her life, she finally deserved to rest comfortably.
And that, according to her nephew, was how they were able to say goodbye to her.
