Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles, aged 75, has been diagnosed with cancer. However, they did not specify details about the illness.

Buckingham Palace announced today that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer. Although the Palace did not specify the type or status of the illness, the news comes shortly after the royal family confirmed that the 75-year-old King had sought treatment for an enlarged prostate. “During the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate health issue was observed. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the statement read.

It was also confirmed that Charles is receiving regular medical treatment. While he will postpone his public duties, he will continue to work on state matters and official documentation. “He remains entirely positive about the treatment and looks forward to returning to his public duties as soon as possible,” the statement continued. “His Majesty has decided to share his diagnosis to avoid speculation and in the hope that it may help public understanding for all those worldwide affected by cancer.”

The royal family has faced a series of health issues: the Princess of Wales is currently recovering from planned abdominal surgery that saw her spend 13 days in the hospital. Though she returned home to Windsor from the London Clinic last week, Kate is not expected to return to her public duties until after Easter. “The Wales family continues to be grateful for the well-wishes they have received from around the world,” Kensington Palace said in a statement issued on January 29th.

The news comes less than a year after King Charles’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey in May 2023.
