Lady Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix, and Todd Phillips present ‘Joker: Folie À Deux’ in Venice, clarifying that it’s not a conventional musical.
The highly anticipated premiere of ‘Joker: Folie À Deux’ took place at the Venice Film Festival, with director Todd Phillips and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in attendance. While the film has been described as a “dystopian musical,” those involved clarify that it’s not a traditional musical. Phillips explained that the music is used as a way to express the characters’ internal emotions, a natural evolution from the first film, where Arthur Fleck already displayed an inclination towards musicality.
Lady Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn, mentioned that the music in the film serves as a way for the characters to express themselves when words aren’t enough. Phoenix, for his part, highlighted that both he and Gaga insisted on singing live during the musical scenes, which added authenticity to their performances.

Phillips admitted to being more nervous about this premiere than the first one, due to the high expectations. Despite these challenges, the team feels that Venice was the ideal place to present the film, given the special connection they have with the festival.
The movie, which follows Arthur Fleck on his emotional journey and his relationship with Harley Quinn, will have its worldwide release in October.
