The actress and activist has spoken out at the San Sebastián Festival in defence of freedom of expression and against the current socio-political climate in the US.

Angelina Jolie has once again shown that her commitment goes far beyond cinema. During her appearance at the San Sebastián Festival to present Couture, her new drama directed by Alice Winocour, the actress did not shy away from addressing the delicate moment the United States is going through, advocating for freedom of expression and expressing her concern about the current socio-political landscape.

“I love my country, but I do not recognise my country right now,” she stated calmly and cautiously to the press. “I have always lived internationally; my family is international, my friends, my life… My vision of the world is egalitarian, united and international, so anything, anywhere, that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms seems very dangerous to me.”

Her words, reported by Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER, carry particular weight following the recent controversy surrounding the indefinite cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after a remark by the host about Donald Trump and the murder of far-right activist Charlie Kirk. Although Jolie did not directly refer to this case, her message appeared to fit within the same context.

“We are living through very serious times, and we must be careful with what we say. But, like all of you and those watching us, I feel that we are going through truly difficult moments,” she concluded.

Couture, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), interweaves the stories of three women from Ukraine, France and Sudan in the days leading up to a fashion show in Paris. The film has been praised by critics, particularly for Jolie’s performance, marking a new chapter in her more intimate and committed career.
