Anne Hathaway defies fashion norms on the red carpet with her fun and feminine style.
The red carpet is a place where actors go to be taken seriously as artists. There, you’re not just a famous person with a Warner Bros contract; you’re a darling of cinema, an actor, and you’re so committed to your craft that you dress methodically. Usually, this also means people wear long dresses and opera gloves, garments that cling to the conventions of the beau monde, while repeating the phrase “Old Hollywood” in fashion interviews, because tradition equals legitimacy.
Anne Hathaway, who has portrayed the doomed grisette and has the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress to prove it, seems unconcerned with any of this. (At least not while promoting her new romantic comedy, The Idea of You, based on a 2017 Harry Styles fanfiction). “For some reason, we talk about coming-of-age stories as something that happens in the earliest part of your life, and I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’m still blooming,” she said at the film’s premiere this weekend. “I don’t want to be pigeonholed, and I don’t want to be put in a box of what kind of movies I have to make because of my age, gender, and because I won an Oscar. I want to have fun, damn it!”

That’s a sentiment that could also be applied to Hathaway’s wardrobe. Last night, she wore a crystal-embellished minidress from Patou‘s spring/summer 2024 collection, paired with Aquazzura platforms and a handful of Bulgari jewels. It seemed like she might be celebrating her birthday at a metropolitan cocktail bar, drawing inspiration from the kind of sequin-embroidered glamour enjoyed by Amal Clooney: a woman who long ago proved that flirty and feminine clothing doesn’t have to detract from someone’s professional achievements.
