Demi Lovato is reflecting on how she came out to her parents.
In a new interview, the 30-year-old singer shared some details about her private conversation with her parents when she first came out to them five years ago.
“It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mom,” Demi shared on SiriusXM. “At the time I was identifying as bisexual, but then I realized I was pansexual. It took me a while.”
Demi, who uses she/her and they/them pronouns, also said that she comes from a Christian background and grew up as a queer person, but didn’t tell people until she felt comfortable with it.
Demi then recalled some “obvious clues” about her sexuality, specifically referencing her 2015 song “Cool for the Summer,” where she sings, “Got a taste for the cherry I just need to take a bite.”
That was when Demi first came out to her stepfather.
“I said, ‘Hey, I need to tell you something.’ I said, ‘I like girls, too,’ and he was like, ‘Yeah, I know. You have ‘Cool for the Summer,'” Demi recalled.
As for her mother’s reaction, Demi said, “She almost started crying and said, ‘I just want you to be happy.'”
Demi then added that her mother’s reaction was “very valuable and appreciated” because “there are so many parents that don’t respond that way and it breaks my heart.”
In another recent interview, Demi talked about using she/her pronouns again after previously identifying as non-binary.
