Disney Channel is ending its free-to-air broadcasts after 27 years, prioritising Disney+ as the focus of its global digital strategy.
On 7 January 2025, Disney Channel will cease its free-to-air transmissions in Spain, marking the end of nearly three decades of family entertainment. This decision is part of The Walt Disney Company’s global strategy to prioritise its streaming platform, Disney+, where all classic and current channel content will now be available.

Disney Channel has been a cultural touchstone for generations, offering beloved programmes like ‘Hannah Montana‘ and films such as ‘High School Musical‘. However, the shift towards digital consumption has driven the company to centralise its offerings on streaming, catering to the changing habits of younger audiences. Disney+ has emerged as the primary hub for these productions, featuring a catalogue that ranges from nostalgic titles to exclusive new series.
Meanwhile, the children’s channel Disney Junior will continue to be available on pay-TV operators, ensuring younger viewers still have access to age-appropriate content.
This move marks the end of an era for free-to-air television and highlights the transition to a digital model centred on streaming platforms.
