Away from the spotlight and without any artifice, Dove Cameron has shared the most intimate details of her engagement to Damiano David — and the reason they chose to keep it private for months

Dove Cameron is living through one of the most significant moments of her personal and professional life. The 30-year-old actress and singer has revealed how her fiancé Damiano David proposed, and why they both decided to wait until January to publicly announce their engagement, despite it having taken place in October.

During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she was promoting her new film 56 Days, Cameron described a scene far removed from any pre-packaged romantic ideal. Although she knew a proposal would come at some point — David had spoken to her about the ring and the process behind its creation — she had no idea when or how it would happen.

The moment arrived in the middle of everyday chaos, as she was packing for a trip. “It was a day I never would have imagined. I was packing, at my worst: an oversized T-shirt, no makeup, hair still wet, running around the house like a creature,” she joked. That was when she noticed a familiar look in Damiano’s eyes — one she says “all women recognise”: the look of someone who loves even the mess of daily life.

Her initial reaction was pure nerves. “I panicked. I thought, do I do my nails? What do I do? And he just kept saying, ‘baby…’” The proposal happened at home, without staging or grand gestures — and that, she explained, was exactly where its power lay. “I know some people want rose petals or something huge, but our lives are already public enough. There’s no romance in that for us. I want dishes, I want laundry, I want cooking together. I love you in your big T-shirt. This is the life I choose, and I hope you choose the same,” she said before asking him to marry her.

Her answer was immediate and emotional. “I cried from the first second. I couldn’t stop,” she recalled. An intimate moment that stands in sharp contrast to the highly public image surrounding them both.

The engagement took place in October, but just two hours after the proposal they flew to Australia. Upon landing, paparazzi photographed them wearing their rings. “We weren’t planning to announce it. But literally on the first day there were already photos,” she explained. Even so, they chose to wait until the media noise settled. “We did it when everything calmed down and it finally felt like our moment.”

Beyond the personal, Cameron is also at a creative turning point. During the interview, she confirmed that after years of work and revisions, her record label has finally given her the green light to release her full debut album later this year. A long-awaited project, following Alchemical: Volume 1, released in December 2023 and conceived as the first half of a two-part body of work.

Engaged, creatively aligned and operating from a rare place of personal honesty in Hollywood, Dove Cameron appears to be building her future from something quieter and more deliberate. Without rush. Without spectacle. And, for the first time, entirely on her own terms.
