Prince Frederik of Luxembourg passed away at the age of 22 due to a rare genetic disease, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and inspiration.

Prince Frederik of Luxembourg died at 22 from mitochondrial disease PolG, a rare genetic condition. His family announced his passing on March 1 in Paris, leaving a legacy of perseverance and commitment to medical research.

The son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau, Frederik was born with the disease, though it was not diagnosed until he was 14, when symptoms became more pronounced. Despite his condition, he dedicated his life to raising awareness about the illness, founding the POLG Foundation to promote research and the development of treatments.

In an emotional message, his father remembered him as a young man with an “unwavering sense of humour, exceptional emotional intelligence, and boundless compassion.” Even in his final moments, Frederik wished to bid farewell to his family with a joke, demonstrating his strength until the very end.

His legacy extends beyond royalty, becoming a symbol of inspiration for those facing rare diseases. His battle, fought with dignity and optimism, leaves an indelible mark on the history of Luxembourg and the international medical community.
