The universe of ‘Game of Thrones’ could soon expand to the big screen with a film focused on Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror who unified Westeros.

The world of ‘Game of Thrones’ may be on the verge of making its long-awaited leap to cinema. Warner Bros. is currently developing a film project set within the universe created by George R.R. Martin, with a preliminary script written by Beau Willimon, best known as the showrunner of ‘House of Cards’. According to several industry sources, the studio has already received a first draft of the screenplay, centred on one of the most pivotal figures in the history of Westeros: Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror who founded the Targaryen dynasty.

The story would be set roughly three hundred years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’, exploring the legendary conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. Aegon I, alongside his sisters and their dragons, managed to subdue six of the seven territories of Westeros through a military campaign that would shape the political destiny of the continent for centuries. Although his figure is fundamental to the mythology of the saga, he has never been portrayed directly in any of the television series, creating a particularly compelling narrative opportunity for fans.

However, the project is still surrounded by uncertainty. The future of several Warner Bros. productions is tied to the complex corporate situation currently affecting the studio, which is in the middle of a potential acquisition by Paramount Skydance following the $111 billion offer presented by David Ellison. Some industry executives believe that parts of the release schedule could be temporarily frozen while regulatory processes unfold.

Even so, more optimistic voices within the industry argue that the studio cannot afford to slow its production pipeline, especially after a strong year at the box office. Alongside this potential ‘Game of Thrones’ film, Warner Bros. continues to move forward with several major productions, including ‘The Batman II’, a sequel to ‘Minecraft’, and the next ‘Superman’ instalment directed by James Gunn, which is scheduled to begin filming in Atlanta this April.

At the same time, the studio appears to be balancing large-scale franchises with smaller productions. Series such as ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, also set in the world of Westeros, have shown that cultural success does not always depend on enormous budgets. With estimated costs between $8 and $10 million per episode, the series has captured audience attention without relying on the massive spectacle of dragons and large-scale battles.

Within this context, a film centred on Aegon the Conqueror could become a key piece in the future of the franchise. The character represents the very origin of the story that captivated audiences worldwide for eight seasons, and his epic tale — filled with wars, alliances and dragons — contains all the ingredients of a major cinematic production.

For now, Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the development of the project, but the fact that a prominent writer such as Beau Willimon has already delivered a first draft suggests that the studio is actively exploring new ways to expand one of the most influential television sagas of the modern era. If it ultimately moves forward, the conquest of Westeros could become the first major cinematic adventure set in the world of ‘Game of Thrones’.
