Goop by Gwyneth Paltrow Faces Copyright Infringement Lawsuit over “GOOD. CLEAN. GOOP” Name from Good Clean Love Inc.
Gwyneth Paltrow‘s sexual wellness brand, Goop, sued for copyright infringement. Renowned for her expensive taste in sexual toys and that vagina-scented candle, Paltrow has once again made headlines about sex, and it could cost her. According to Business Insider, the sexual wellness company Good Clean Love Inc. is suing for copyright infringement over the name “GOOD. CLEAN. GOOP.”
The trademark was filed in 2023 and anticipated the launch of “cosmetics and nutritional supplements.” However, soon after, Goop began releasing sexual health products under the same umbrella, creating conflict for Good Clean Love Inc.
For those unfamiliar, Paltrow’s Goop is a wellness brand that delves into the latest lifestyle trends and products for women. The brand was founded in 2008 but has grown to be as famous as its founder, Paltrow. To safeguard its name and profits, Good Clean Love filed an infringement lawsuit on March 28 to “prevent the calamitous situation.”
On April 4, a spokesperson for Goop issued a statement:
Goop typically does not comment on pending litigation, but given the allegations, we would like to make it clear that we believe this lawsuit is without merit. The market is saturated with brands called ‘good clean [fill in the blank].’ Goop’s skincare, body care, and wellness line, ‘good.clean.goop,’ is accessible and sold at Target and Amazon, and the Goop brand is well-known for these products. Therefore, we are confident that consumers distinguish goop among the myriad of other “good clean” products in the market. We stand behind our products as clean and are proud to have pioneered the clean beauty movement.
“Good Clean Love cannot compete with Goop’s market saturation,” the brand wrote in court documents. “The confusion and reverse confusion created by Goop’s use of GOOD. CLEAN. GOOP threaten to prevent Good Clean Love from expanding into product lines related to its sexual health and wellness products. Good Clean Love’s hard-earned good name is at risk of falling into the hands of Goop, the junior user… Without this Court’s swift assistance, Goop’s adoption of the GOOD. CLEAN. GOOP mark threatens to overwhelm the GOOD CLEAN LOVE brand and undermine Good Clean Love’s two decades of investment in its good name and reputation.”
