The ‘Hannah Montana’ special on Disney+ moves audiences but sparks criticism over the absence of Emily Osment and Mitchel Musso, with fans calling it incomplete.

The return of ‘Hannah Montana’ with its 20th anniversary special was set to become one of the most emotional television moments of the year. And, in part, it has delivered. However, what was meant to be a full-circle celebration has ultimately left a bittersweet feeling among the show’s most devoted fans.

The reason is clear: the absence of Emily Osment and Mitchel Musso, two essential pillars of the original series. For those who grew up with the story of Miley Stewart, Lilly Truscott and Oliver Oken were never just supporting characters — they were the emotional core of the narrative, balancing humour, friendship and chemistry.

As soon as viewers realised that neither actor appeared in the special, social media reactions were immediate. “It feels incomplete without Lilly and Oliver,” wrote one user on X. Another added: “They were the main trio, this doesn’t make sense.” The conversation quickly filled with similar comments, highlighting how nostalgia depends not only on format, but on the people who shaped it.

Rather than ignoring the situation, Emily Osment addressed fans directly. In a video shared on Instagram, she explained that her absence was not a personal decision, but due to scheduling conflicts. She is currently filming ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’, the spin-off of ‘Young Sheldon’, which prevented her from joining the production.

Her message, however, carried a strong emotional tone. “Hannah Montana changed my life,” she said, also expressing gratitude for the continued support of fans: “I can’t explain what your messages mean to me.” A gesture that was appreciated, though it did not fully fill the void many felt while watching the special.

Meanwhile, Mitchel Musso opted for a more nostalgic tribute. Through social media, he shared throwback images accompanied by a heartfelt message: “We grew up with you… and that’s something that never goes away.”

Interestingly, the interaction between the two actors added another meaningful layer. Osment replied to Musso’s post with “I love you so much,” reinforcing the idea that, even if they were not physically present, their bond remains intact.

The special, now available on Disney+, blends memories, music and interviews, capturing the spirit of a series that defined a generation. Still, the absence of two of its key figures has reignited a broader question: can a reunion truly work without all its protagonists?

Because beyond nostalgia, what fans wanted was that original chemistry — the dynamic that made ‘Hannah Montana’ a global phenomenon. And for many, that magic simply wasn’t complete.

Perhaps this special is not a final chapter, but the beginning of something new. But one thing is clear: for this generation, the story of Hannah, Lilly and Oliver remains inseparable.
