Jacob Elordi and Lily-Rose Depp lead ‘Outer Dark’, a haunting adaptation of McCarthy’s novel now heating up the Cannes Market.
Jacob Elordi and Lily-Rose Depp are set to lead ‘Outer Dark’, a film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s haunting 1968 novel. Set in Depression-era Appalachia, the story follows a young woman who gives birth to her brother’s child. He abandons the newborn in the woods, claiming it died naturally, prompting the sister to uncover the truth and embark on a perilous search. As they journey separately, three terrifying strangers leave a trail of destruction in their wake.
Described as a “dark fairytale”, the film will mark the English-language debut of Oscar-winning Hungarian director László Nemes (Son of Saul), who co-wrote the script with Clara Royer. The film is being produced by Mike Goodridge (Good Chaos) alongside Nemes, with Ilene Feldman and Ori Eisen as executive producers.
Fresh off critical acclaim in ‘The Narrow Road To The Deep North’, Elordi joins Depp, who earned accolades for her performance in ‘Nosferatu’. According to Nemes, “McCarthy’s novel is a profound inspiration to build a world that vibrates with life and death simultaneously”.
The project is currently generating significant buzz at Cannes, with talks underway to secure production partners.
