Hollywood continues to look towards video games, with Jason Momoa set to lead the big-screen adaptation of ‘Helldivers’, one of the most popular recent shooters.
The relationship between the video game industry and cinema continues to strengthen. Jason Momoa will headline the film adaptation of ‘Helldivers’, the action title developed by PlayStation, with its theatrical release scheduled for 10 November 2027.
The project will be directed by Justin Lin, best known for his work on the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise, marking another major action role for Momoa following his time in the superhero universe as Aquaman. The film is being produced by Sony Pictures alongside PlayStation Productions, reinforcing a partnership the studio has been building for years.
Originally released in 2015, the video game follows the Helldivers, an elite unit of soldiers sent behind enemy lines to battle alien creatures and defend the so-called Super Earth. Its concept blends military action with a satirical tone that playfully parodies classic sci-fi war narratives.
The film forms part of Sony’s broader strategy to transform its gaming properties into audiovisual franchises. The studio previously adapted ‘Uncharted’ in 2022 and was involved in the television versions of ‘Twisted Metal’ and ‘The Last of Us’, proving that audience interest in these stories extends far beyond the interactive screen.
The momentum has been further boosted by the recent success of ‘Helldivers 2’, released in 2024, which surpassed 20 million copies sold and generated more than $700 million, confirming the saga’s commercial potential.
With Jason Momoa at the helm, the adaptation aims to become Hollywood’s next attempt to translate the cultural impact of video games onto the big screen.
