Jenna Ortega left X after encountering explicit AI-generated images of herself as a teenager, calling them “terrifying and corrupting.”

In an interview with The New York Times, Jenna Ortega revealed she decided to leave Twitter after coming across AI-generated explicit images of her as a teenager. Additionally, the actress received a barrage of fan messages ranging from “disgusting” to “absurd.”

“I hate AI,” Ortega said. “It could be used for amazing things, like detecting breast cancer four years before it progresses. That’s beautiful. But seeing edited dirty content of me when I was 14 is terrifying, corrupting, and wrong.” Ortega recalled receiving her first direct message on social media when she was 12—an unsolicited photo of a man’s genitals—and that was just the beginning.

“I had that Twitter account because I was told I needed to build my image,” Ortega explained. “I deleted it two or three years ago due to the avalanche of absurd images after the show came out. I was already confused and just deleted it.”

Ortega has been promoting her role in Tim Burton’s ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ which will open the Venice Film Festival before its theatrical release on September 6. She started her acting career at age 9, exposing her to online harassment from a young age. “Sometimes I regret it; sometimes my parents regret it. But I wouldn’t change anything because I’m incredibly grateful for the lessons it taught me,” Ortega concluded.
