Actress Karla Sofía Gascón faces a crisis in her awards campaign following controversy over past tweets. Netflix has scaled back its support.
Karla Sofía Gascón’s awards campaign for Emilia Pérez appears to be crumbling. According to a recent report, Netflix is reducing its backing for the actress in the race for the Oscars, making her chances of winning more uncertain.
In recent days, Gascón has faced intense controversy after old tweets resurfaced, containing comments deemed offensive and alleged statements against her colleagues. Despite making history as the first trans person nominated in an acting category at the Academy Awards, the situation could impact her path to the statuette.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the platform is not providing the usual support that a studio typically offers its contenders during awards season, such as funding for travel and accommodation. As a result, Gascón has canceled her attendance at major events, including the AFI Awards luncheon (February 6), the Critics Choice Awards (February 7), the PGA Awards (February 8), and the Virtuoso Award ceremony at the Santa Barbara Film Festival (February 9).
Given this situation, the actress will remain in Spain, leaving her participation in future award ceremonies uncertain.
