Fresh from her appearance at the MTV VMAs, Lady Gaga captivated viewers on The Late Show with a performance as stripped-back as it was powerful.

On Monday night, the artist once again proved why she remains one of the most complete, fearless and emotionally resonant performers of her generation. Invited by Stephen Colbert, the Mayhem singer delivered a raw, unadorned rendition of Vanish Into You, accompanied only by piano, guitar and bass, on a stage defined by its minimalist aesthetic and magnetic intensity.

With a voice that broke at just the right moments, Lady Gaga channelled the song’s introspective spirit and transformed the studio into an intimate sanctuary. Even Colbert himself appeared visibly moved by the emotion of the performance. The set has since gone viral on social media, with one user writing: “No costumes, no lights, no theatrics. Just Gaga and the truth of a song.”

The night before, Gaga had made a fleeting appearance at the MTV VMAs, stepping onto the stage in an elegant black gown to collect her awards before slipping away to deliver a surprise concert elsewhere in New York. There, she unveiled the first live performance of The Dead Dance, the haunting anthem from the second season of Wednesday.

With this new chapter in her career, Gaga reminds the world of what many already knew: when she sits at the piano, pop itself pauses to listen.
